San Agustín Canton

The canton of San Agustín is a municipality in the department of Potosí in the highlands of South American Andes State of Bolivia.

The Cantón San Agustín is one of four cantons in the county ( bolivian: municipality ) in the Province of San Agustín Enrique Baldivieso. It is bordered to the north, east and west by the province of Nor Lípez, and on the south by the Canton Alota.

The canton extends between about 21 ° 04 'and 21 ° 19' south latitude and 67 ° 30 ' and 67 ° 48 ' west longitude, from north to south it measures up to 25 kilometers from west to east up to 30 kilometers. In the canton there are five municipalities, the central location is San Agustin in the northern part of the canton with 533 inhabitants ( 2001 census). The average height of the canton is 4000 m.

Geography

The canton of San Agustín is located on the Bolivian Altiplano between the Andes mountain ranges of the Cordillera Occidental in the west and the Cordillera de Lípez in the southeast.

The literacy rate for those over 19 years is 85 percent, and that 97 percent of men and 76 percent in women. The most important idiom with a share of 96 percent is Quechua, 86 percent of the population speaks Spanish. 95 percent of the population are Catholic, 2 percent Protestant.

99.7 percent of the population have no access to electricity, 99 percent have no sanitary facilities.

Some of the women work as migrant workers in northern Chile, but the population applies for some years an additional income from the collection of wild herbs in the framework of the development program of the Global Environment Facility ( GEF).
