San Benedetto del Tronto

San Benedetto del Tronto is a town in the extreme south of the Marche region of Italy, situated on the Adriatic. A few kilometers south of the city begins the Abruzzo region. With 46 962 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) is the second largest city in the province of Ascoli Piceno. The town also includes the district of Porto d' Ascoli.

The first documentary mention of the city dates from the year 998

The neighboring municipalities are Acquaviva Picena, Grottammare, Martinsicuro (TE) and Monteprandone.

Twinning

Consist twinned with the cities of Mar del Plata in Argentina and Steyr in Austria.

Sports

The football club SS Sambenedettese Calcio played for many years in the Italian professional leagues and is in the 2010/11 season in Serie D, the highest amateur league active.

2010 was San Benedetto del Tronto hosted the European Championships in inline speedskating.
