San Domenico (Perugia)

San Domenico is a church in the Umbrian town of Perugia minor with the title of Basilica.

Even from the outside can be seen clearly that the Church has taken an uneven development. S. Domenico once had great historic importance, has been so far as a 1304 " Italianized " which is actually northern European form of the church hall. This construction, however, fell in 1614 and is in its present form the work of the Renaissance.

The interior was rebuilt in 1632 by Carlo Maderno. Here in Perugia formed by converting an unusual form emerged showing a certain similarity to the longhouse from St. Peter's in Rome, which was also created by Maderno. But this space is on one level, there are no windows in the nave. About the arcades catches directly to the barrel vault. However, the window area of St. Peter's in Rome is not very pronounced.

For San Domenico has slightly higher in the chorus of one of the largest Gothic windows of the history of art. It dates from the 15th century (the upper part 1759), is 21 meters high and 8.5 meters wide. There are probably only two windows that are larger, first the chancel window of Gloucester Cathedral in England with 24 meters high and 12 meters wide ( = 185 m ) and the apse window of the Milan Cathedral. Such windows are absolutely unusual for the Italian area. Since you tried rather to keep the window small and thus oppose the outer heat the shadow of the interior. This has become necessary because no other lighting exists such a large window.

On a fresco of the 15th century from the chapel of Prior Prior palace of Benedetto Bonfigli can be seen in contrast to the other, much smaller stained glass windows in the middle of this large choir windows of S. Domenico.

The original still preserved Renaissance cloister (1455-1579) is in sharp contrast to the Unglücksbau the church behind it.

In the left transept is the grave of Benedict XI. by Giovanni Pisano.
