San Felice sul Panaro

San Felice sul Panaro is a northern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 10,961 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the Province of Modena in the Emilia- Romagna. The community is located about 27.5 kilometers northeast of Modena, about 38 kilometers west of Ferrara and about 41 kilometers northwest of Bologna. The municipality is located in the southern Po Valley.

History

Already in the 8th century, the area was part of the territory of the abbey to Nonantola. 927 the town was first mentioned as Castellum Sancti Felicis. The later addition ( sul Panaro ) arose in later times, to distinguish the community from other similar community names. It refers to the Panaro, a tributary of the Po, although the Panaro is not flowing through the municipality.

On 20 May 2012, the city was hit by an earthquake, the value of 6.5 on the Richter scale. Among other historic buildings, the castle was badly damaged.

In another quake several people came on May 29 in San Felice killed.

Economy and Transport

San Felice sul Panaro is a railway station on the route from Bologna towards Brenner. The region is known for meat production. In particular, the salami produced here enjoys the protection of the designation of origin.

Through the community should, according to preliminary planning a highway ( Autostrada ) from Bologna to Ferrara lead ( Autostrada A22 connection with the Autostrada A13).
