San Francesco (Viterbo)

The Basilica of San Francesco alla Rocca is a church in Viterbo in the Italian region of Lazio. It is located on the Colle di Sonza in the northeast corner of the city walls at the Porta Fiorentina: It is dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi.

Architectural History

The church was from 1236 on the grounds of Castello di Sonza, the Pope Gregory IX. the Franciscans gave built. Built in 1208 Palazzo degli Alemanni was integrated into the attached monastery building. The monastery housed until its dissolution in 1873, the Franciscan Theological University.

The church was restored in the 16th and 17th century Baroque style. After being destroyed in the Second World War, the church was restored to 1953 and thereby removes the baroque ingredients again.

Appearance

The simple façade has a Romanesque portal with spiral columns. The original façade still had a portico and was decorated with frescoes. On the right corner of an outside pulpit inflicted by the Bernardine of Siena was preached in 1428.

Affairs

The basilica has a floor plan, a Latin cross with a square apse and open roof truss. Famous are the Papstgrabmäler. 1270 created Pietro di Oderisio the final resting place for Pope Clement IV. Arnolfo di Cambio in 1276 built the tomb for Pope Adrian V. with Kosmatendekoration.
