San Francisco Opera

The San Francisco Opera is an opera house in San Francisco.

It was founded in 1923 by Gaetano Merola, they opened with a performance of La Bohème. The game was initially at the Civic Auditorium in San Francisco. Today's venue, the War Memorial Opera House, opened in 1932.

After the death Merolas Kurt Herbert Adler in 1953 took over the management until his retirement in 1981. Adler brought many stars from Europe to San Francisco and led the San Francisco Opera to international renown.

The other Directors-General were Terence McEwen (1982-1988), Lotfi Mansouri (1988-2001), Pamela Rosenberg (2001-2005) and since January 2006 David Gockley.
