San Fratello

San Fratello is a city in the province of Messina in the Italian region Sicily, with 3854 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

Location and data

San Fratello is located 119 km west of Messina. The inhabitants mainly work in agriculture. In San Fratello Sanfratellaner horses are bred.

The neighboring municipalities are Acquedolci, Alcara li Fusi, Caronia, Cesarò, Militello Rosmarino and Sant'Agata di Militello.

History

North of the present village on a hill lies the ancient Apollonia, a settlement of the Siculi that was bright Siert later. The town was founded at the time I. Rogers of the Lombards, who settled after his marriage to Adelasia in Sicily. In the years 1754 and 1922 destroyed the city landslides. Many inhabitants still speak a Gallo- Italic dialect, which differs fundamentally from the Sicilian.

The traditions of San Fratello are of the emigrants also at the destinations of emigration of highly maintained ( Viggiù in Lombardy ).

After heavy rains early February 2010 showed the first cracks in houses of the village, which pointed to a movement of the substrate. Faced with the imminent landslide half of the town was evacuated. A short time later slipped off the slope and buried several houses.
