The San Gabriel Mountains are a mountain range in northern Los Angeles County and western San Bernardino County in California.

The formation demarcates the Greater Los Angeles Area of the Mojave Desert. Between the latter and the northern border of the mountains, the San Andreas Fault runs east are the San Bernardino Mountains. The entire region is within the Angeles National Forest, which is a popular recreation especially for the residents of the nearby city of Los Angeles. The highest mountain is 3,067 meters, Mount San Antonio, which is popularly known also Mt Baldy. Another well-known mountain is the 1,749 meter high Mount Wilson, where the Mount Wilson Observatory is built.

Transport and Tourism

The California State Route 2 or the portion thereof Angeles Crest Highway is the main artery that runs through the San Gabriel Mountains. The road condition is bad in places, the route winding. In winter, the Angeles Crest Highway is closed due to rockfall and avalanche danger. Another important section of road is the Angeles Forest Highway, which runs from its intersection with the Angeles Crest Highway to the vicinity of Acton and thus the Antelope Valley and connects the surrounding forests with Los Angeles.

Mt Baldy and Mountain High are the most popular winter sports areas in the San Gabriel Mountains. In summer, the mountain region is also well visited by hikers and trekkers.
