San Ignacio Miní

San Ignacio Miní is a former Jesuit reduction founded by Roque González de Santa Cruz. This is located 63 km north-east of Posadas in Argentina. The first Jesuits arrived in 1610 in this area and founded this reduction initially at a different location, until the mission was finally erected in 1696 at the site of present-day ruins. The reductions were used to evangelize the indigenous Guaraní.

In the heyday of San Ignacio Miní 1730 it was inhabited by approximately 4000 people ( missionaries and Guaraní ).

When the Jesuits were expelled by the Spanish in 1767 from South America, the Indians left the reduction, and the city was abandoned. In 1984 she was declared together with three other missions in Argentina by the UNESCO World Heritage Site.
