San Javier (Misiones)

San Javier is the capital of the department of San Javier in the province of Misiones in northeast Argentina. It lies on the banks of the Rio Uruguay over the Brazilian city of Porto Xavier. Its distance to the provincial capital Posadas is 132 kilometers. In the classification of municipalities in the province of place belongs to the municipalities of the second category.

History

San Javier was founded by the Jesuits from 1629.

Economy

Agriculture is the main industry. The town is the largest sugarcane producer in the province and has a built in 1961 sugar cane factory. Other crops include tea, cassava, tobacco and mate.

Tourism

During Easter week is San Javier destination of pilgrims from Misiones, Corrientes, Paraguay and Brazil, the Chapel and Calvary of Cerro Monje attention.
