San Juan Bautista is the capital of the Chilean Juan Fernandez Islands in the eastern Pacific. The place is located on the Cumberland Bay in the center of the north east coast of Robinson Crusoe Island.

Some sources say that starting in 1877 took place, while other sources date the founding to 1750.

After the battle of Rancagua in 1814, the Spaniards sent 42 Chilean criollos of the independence movement on the island. The Exilchilenen were, among others, Juan Manuel de Salas Egaña and who lived in the Cuevas de los Patriotas ( "Patriot caves " ) above San Juan Bautista.

Although the residents have maintained a peaceful village in the trade of lobsters, there are some vehicles, a satellite internet connection and many TVs. As of the 2002 census, the village had 598 inhabitants in an area of 0.31 square kilometers.

There is a football field at the north end of town and a school named Dresden School (source Scielo.cl ), named after the German ship SMS Dresden, which sank here in the First World War.

When the tsunami, the earthquake in Chile triggered in 2010, high waves were almost all the buildings destroyed on 27 February 2010 up to 2.3 meters. A majority of the residents could save on higher ground in time. For some, however, the warning came too late.
