San Lorenzo de El Escorial

San Lorenzo de El Escorial is a municipality in the north-west of the Spanish Comunidad de Madrid.

Geography

The municipality is located in the Sierra de Guadarrama in an average height of 1,035 meters and is 47 km from Madrid. It has 18,495 inhabitants ( 1 January 2013).

Attractions

In San Lorenzo, there are two monuments that are closely linked to the history of Spain:

  • The monastery and palace complex Real Sitio de San Lorenzo de El Escorial, erected from 1563 to 1584 on the initiative of King Philip II of Spain, designed by Juan Bautista de Toledo, is considered the greatest Renaissance building in the world.
  • The Abadia de la Santa Cruz del Valle de los Caídos may be the most important architectural symbol of the Franco dictatorship are considered.

Twinning

The municipality maintains partnerships to Saint- Quentin in France and San Lorenzo in Paraguay.
