San Lorenzo (Paraguay)

The university town of San Lorenzo is the seat of the largest university of Paraguay, the Universidad Nacional de Asuncion ( UNA ). The district is located in the Central Department in Paraguay, about 13 kilometers from the capital of Asunción.

San Lorenzo was founded in 1775 by the Spanish governor Augustin Fernando de Pinedo. In the 1970s, most of the faculties of the Universidad Nacional de Asunción were moved to San Lorenzo on a new campus.

The city is the seat of the Diocese of San Lorenzo.

San Lorenzo is a junction of roads Paraguay, since lead from there the Ruta 1 to Encarnación and the Ruta 2 to Coronel Oviedo and Ciudad del Este.

San Lorenzo has 287 977 inhabitants ( 2002 census ), making it one of the largest cities in Paraguay.
