San Martín del Rey Aurelio

San Martín del Rey Aurelio is a municipality in the autonomous community of Asturias, in northern Spain.

Location

The community is bounded by Siero in the north, to the west of Langreo, east of Bimenes and Laviana in the south of Mieres and Laviana

To the Middle Ages

As almost everywhere in Asturias confirm findings from the Bronze Age, the early settlement of the region. Several hill forts and burial mounds from the Iron Age, then, can be seen today. The Romans had a major road that led along the Rio Navia. There are still bridges which are used to today.

Today

The name " San Martín del Rey Aurelio " supposedly leads back to the king Aurelio I, who reigned in the early Middle Ages, the Kingdom of Asturias ( according to the legend of San Martin from ). San Martin, however, was administratively subordinate to the neighboring Langreo. In the 18th century, the region has made news again during the Spanish War of Independence and the Carlistenaufstände.

Geography

Land

The predominantly of limestone, shale and sandstone background with rich deposits of coal and ore are typical for this region.

Waters

The municipality is crossed by Río Nalón.

Climate

As in many parts of Asturias there by proximity to the Gulf Stream here an almost Mediterranean climate with warm dry summers but cold winters ago, in the fall it comes sometimes to relatively strong storms.

Economy

The mining industry is since ancient times one of the largest employers in the region, otherwise as in many parts of Asturias, agriculture is the largest source of income. Specifically, the livestock industry here has the largest share. Because of its location on the Rio Nalón the tourism industry is conceived especially for nature lovers heavily in growth. Trade and production takes place in mid-sized companies mainly.
