San Miguel Department, Corrientes

The department of San Miguel is located in the north of the province of Corrientes in the north- eastern Argentina and is one of 25 administrative units in the province.

To the north it borders, separated by the Río Paraná, Paraguay, on the east by the department of Ituzaingó, on the southwest by the Department of Concepción and on the west by the General Paz

The capital of the department of San Miguel is the same name San Miguel.

Population

The department is sparsely populated, which is also attributed to the fact that a large part of the territory of the nature reserve Esteros del Ibera heard.

History

The region was originally inhabited by the Guarani and was during the colonial seat of the Jesuit reductions. Both Loreto as the Departamentshauptstadt San Miguel emerged from such.
