History

The mountainous region has been inhabited since ancient times by the Daunians. Very likely the city Teate was (also: Tiati ) or Teanum Apulum in today's municipality of San Paolo di Civitate. It was at that time the most important settlement in Apulia.

1043 the creation of the Barony Civitate was the starting point of several feuds. 1053 defeated the Normans at the Battle of Civitate the numerically superior papal army. Civitate founded together with San Severo a diocese. 1580 the office was moved to San Severo. Today, San Paolo di Civitate is under the name Civitate titular.

Only in the 15th century, it came to the creation of today's San Paolo.
