San Paolo Maggiore is an early Baroque church in the city of Naples. It is located on the Piazza San Gaetano.

History

In antiquity, the Piazza San Gaetano was the main square of the city, in the Greek agora time, called in the Roman Forum. There was the Roman temple of the Dioscuri at the site where the present church stands. Two pillars of this temple are preserved and incorporated clearly visible in the facade of the church. Until the collapse of the system in 1688 large parts of the temple were obtained.

In the 9th century was the - Built ruins of a Roman temple to Saints Peter and Paul church dedicated - yet still visible.

The present church dates from the years 1583 to 1603, the side aisles formed 1627th San Paolo Maggiore was built according to plans by Francesco Grimaldi.

Sacristy and crypt

In the sacristy pictures the Neapolitan painter Francesco Solimena are seen.

The entrance to the crypt is next to the entrance stairs to street level. Therein lies the grave of the holy Kajetan_von_Thiene. Outside the church, on the Piazza San Gaetano, there is a statue of this saint.
