San Pedro de Totora is a province in the northern part of the Oruro Department in the highlands of South American Andes State of Bolivia.

Location

The San Pedro de Totora province is one of sixteen provinces in the Oruro Department. It lies between 17 ° 41 'and 18 ° 06' south latitude and between 67 ° 33 ' and 67 ° 58 ' west longitude.

It is bordered on the north by the La Paz Department, to the west and southwest by the province of Sajama, to the southeast by the Carangas Province, and on the east by the province of Nor Carangas.

The province extends over 45 km from east to west and about 50 km in north-south direction.

Population

The population of the San Pedro de Totora province has risen in the past two decades by more than a third:

The most important idiom of the province is Aymara, spoken by 90 percent of the population, followed by Spanish ( 72.5 percent) and Quechua ( 3 percent). 43.0 percent of the population are younger than 15 years old.

99 percent of the population have no access to electricity, 94 percent have no sanitary facilities (1992).

83.5 percent of the working population is employed in agriculture, 4 percent in industry, 12.5 percent in the service sector ( 2001).

64 percent of the population is Catholic, 25 percent are Protestant (1992).
