San Pietro al Natisone

San Pietro al Natisone ( to 1867 San Pietro degli Slavi, Slovenian Speter Slovenov ) is a town with 2232 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Udine in the Italian north-eastern Friuli ( Friuli- Venezia Giulia ).

General

San Pietro al Natisone located 25 kilometers east of Udine near the Slovenian border at the river Natisone and has 2,156 inhabitants. To reach San Pietro al Natisone is on the SS 54 of Udine Cividale about Kobarid (Slovenia).

History

San Pietro al Natisone first belonged to the kingdom of Odoacer, then to the Ostrogothic and Byzantine Empire, before it was conquered by the Lombards 568, temporarily erected its own Duchy there. During this time the population was particularly hard hit, as the city was immediately west of the forest Birnbaumer, which formed as a mountain pass in the Julian Alps, the gateway for the incident each in Italy invaders. Ecclesiastical was under San Pietro al Natisone the Patriarchate of Aquileia. Under the Carolingians, it was part of the Mark Friuli, the Margraviate of Verona, then came under the territorial rule of the Patriarch of Aquileia, before it fell in 1421 to Venice. It was followed by the rule of the Habsburgs (short of a French interlude interrupted) and 1866 integration to Italy.

Saint Peter's Church

The Church of Saint Peter probably not one of the most valuable: modern building, of little architectural interest, however, is distinguished by its beautiful in 1761 by Carlo Palmeser Picco created altar and through the beautiful tabernacle of the Lombard Skulpturisten GA Pilaconte ( 1500), set with cherubs heads and, to finish a Pietà. The Tabernacle is based on a base with engraving representing the St. George and the dragon, created by an anonymous Slovenian champion of the 15th century.

Another special feature is the organ of the old Venetian master Gaetano Callido with balanced sound and the building it excellent excellent acoustics.

Church of San Quirino

The church of San Quirino as the oldest sacral building in the parish stands on a protohistoric necropolis, which took place in the Roman era reuse. The church itself was built in 1250 and renovated in 1493 from the ground up what you can on a walled- in the outer wall of stone, which is called in Gothic script establishment year and builder, read: "Anno Domi (ni) 1493 -ma ( poisons ) r Mart ( inus ) Petr ( I - ic) ". Inside the church, manufactured goods were discovered in prehistoric times. Today the church is a memorial to the casualties of the war.

Attractions in the municipal area

The cave and the rock chapel of San Giovanni in Antro, which can be reached via the village Tiglio, people have long worked to advantage. In a total of 4.5 km long cave one day lived cave and stone age hunters, they served as a refuge during raids in Roman, Celtic and Lombard times. A hermit named deacons Felice is said to have eked his pious, consecrated life and to have been buried here. The tomb with the inscription can still be seen today.

The grotto is accessible only in the first, about 300 m long section, must be approached on foot. The final section consists of 100 steps leading to the rock chapel called San Giovanni Battista ed'Evangelista at the cave entrance. It's all carved out of the rock, just for the front wall and the sacristy of the Slovenian architect has drawn up walls in 1477. Behind the altar is the entrance opens to the dark, often flooded with water grotto.
