History

Before the colonization of California by the whites the land belonged to Seunen Indians. After 1797 the territory belonged to the pastures of Mission San Jose. Later it founded Jose Maria Amador his ranch.

The name comes from an Indian cowboy who stopped here for the mission sheep. The " San " was added to match the name to the then common Spanish names of other places (many of the towns in the area called " San " because they were named after the Christian saints).

The first American settlers arrived in 1850 to San Ramon. Leo and Mary Jane Norris purchased a piece of land from Amador. Other people, including William Lynch, James Dougherty, and Major Samuel Russell settled here and bought land. The names are therefore still widely known, because the streets of San Ramon's her Name: Norris, Lynch, Harlan, McCamley, Crow, Bollinger, Meese, Glass, and Wiedemann. Both the House of Harlan ( built in 1858 ) and that of Wiedemann (1865 ) are still in its original location.

Until the city in 1873, when the first official post office was opened, had received their definitive, current name, changed this a few times. So it was called Brevensville, Lynch will and Limerick.

1864 a railway line was built from San Ramon to Oakland by Brown and Co., 1891 reached the Southern Pacific Railroad San Ramon. By 1909, San Ramon was the terminus of the railway line, which stresses the importance grew as a transportation hub. Both train lines no longer exist today, San Ramon is dominated by the private transport. Interstate 680 crosses the city from north to south since 1966.

In 1970 the town had 4084 inhabitants ( and was still called "Village" ), a total of 25 899 lived in the area. The incorporation as a separate town was held until 1983. Even before work began on the construction of the Bishop Ranch Business Park, which the city should bring strong growth.
