Location of San in the Polish river system
The San (Ukrainian Сян; German Saan ) is a right tributary of the Vistula River in south-eastern Poland, on the border with Ukraine.
The river rises on the northern slopes of the Carpathians on Uschok pass next Usch, on the Carpathian watershed. The source is located in the southeast of the Bieszczady National Park. Piniaszkowy Summit and Sianki are located nearby. The San initially flows to the northwest, from Sanok to the north, from Dynów to the east, from Przemysl again towards the northwest, leaving at Jarosław the mountainous country and opens below Sandomir of the Vistula.
A little below its source, nor on Ukrainian territory, the San is on about 50 km of its course the border between Poland and Ukraine, it again over a short distance below Przemysl. Otherwise, it flows through Polish territory.
The San kkm has a length of 433, making it the sixth- longest Polish river. It is navigable from Jarosław. The catchment area is 16,861 kkm ², of which 14,390 km ² in Poland, the rest in Ukraine.
Together with pissa, Narew and Vistula defined the San border between the German and Soviet spheres of influence, as laid down in the secret protocol to the Soviet-German Non-Aggression Pact of 23 August 1939 and the subsequent diplomatic agreements. Along this border Poland was divided in September 1939 for the fourth time.
The name
On old maps we find the spellings 1097 san, Reku Sanъ, k Sanovi, nad Sanomъ ( 1152 ), Sanu ( 1287 ), San 1339, Szan 1406, Sanok 1438, Saan 1439, Sayn 1445, San 1467, Szan 1517, Shan 1526. the name can be derived from the proto- Indo-European word san ( " fast " or " faster flow " ) derive in Celtic the word " San " has the meaning "river".
