San Sebastiano, Venice

San Sebastiano is a church in Venice, in the Dorsoduro district, which includes a significant portion of the life's work of Paolo Veronese. In the church there are also sculptures by Alessandro Vittoria, and its tomb.

History

In 1396 the Eremtianermönche of St. Jerome founded on the island of Angelo Raffaele a small monastery and a poorhouse. Also was a small oratory, which was replaced by about 1450 by a larger church. Under Napoleon I, the monastery was closed in 1810. The monastery was then reopened as a branch of San Trovaso and later by Angelo Raffaele and partially removed, until finally the building was used by the University of Venice.

The present church

In 1505 a larger building was Antonio Abondi, called Lo Scarpagnino designed, which was completed in 1546. Scarpagnino building is erected in the forms of Renaissance brick building with thrifty ornaments from Istrian marble. It is oriented towards the channel, the two -storied facade is entirely covered with Istrian stone and is crowned by a triangular pediment. The bell of the church was built in 1544-1546.

The church is a rather unconventional hall building, which is equipped with galleries on three sides. The room is like a transept extended by two transverse arms. The square presbytery is separated by three arches of the nave. Of the three adjacent chapels is the mean by a circular apse and a dome with excellent drummer.

The cycle of paintings Paolo Veronese

Famous San Sebastiano is because of the equipment by Veronese's pictures, which are among his masterpieces. The interior is dominated by Veronese in the years 1555-1570 series of paintings executed. In the carved and gilded ceiling of the nave are his painted on canvas images with the following topics: Triumph of Mordecai, repudiation of Vashti and esters is inserted crowned by Ashaver.

The high altar was built 1559-1562. The integrated altarpiece there is a late work by Veronese. Shown is a Madonna enthroned with Saints Peter, Catherine of Alexandria and St. Francis. The dome fresco a Coronation of the Virgin, also from the hand of Veronese is not obtained.

The ceiling of the sacristy was also provided by him, one of the cherubs in the corner fields bears a plaque with the date of completion of the ceiling painting, November 22, in 1555. The main image of the ceiling is a Coronation of the Virgin, with four satellite images of the Evangelists their is accompanied symbols. The pictures on the simple stalls in the sacristy are workshop - work.

Equipment

The organ was built in 1763 by organ builder Nicholas Moscatelli. The instrument has a manual work. The pedal assembly is attached. The registers are located on both sides of the table.
