San Severo

San Severo is a town and comune (Italian comune ) with 54 421 inhabitants ( as at 31 December 2012) in Apulia, Italy, Foggia province.

The neighboring municipalities are Apricena, Foggia, Lucera, Rignano Garganico, San Marco in Lamis, San Paolo di Civitate and Torre Maggiore.

History

San Severo was founded in the 11th century around a small church that was built by the Benedictine monks of Monte Cassino. The town quickly became an important commercial city.

Since 1580 San Severo seat of the Diocese of San Severo.

1799 French troops took the city.

1627, 1828 and 1851 earthquake shook San Severo.

During World War II, the city was the period 2 April 1944 to March 3, 1945 the base for the United States Air Force.
