San Vicente del Raspeig / Sant Vicent del Raspeig

San Vicente del Raspeig ( Valencian El Santuario ) is a city in southeastern Spain in the province of Alicante in the autonomous community of Comunidad Valenciana.

History

The name refers to Vincent Ferrer, who comes from a Valencian family and is revered by the Catholic Church as a saint. The town was founded as an independent municipality in 1836, when he separated from the city of Alicante.

1900, the place had only 4,041 inhabitants, wurchs but due to the proximity to Alicante. With the founding of the University of Alicante in 1979, which has its headquarters in San Vicente, the population grew by leaps and bounds (1970: 16 518 inhabitants in 1981: 23 569 1991: 30 119 ).

Location and transport

The city is only about seven kilometers north of Alicante and is well connected by bus and within driving distance of there. A line of light rail Alicante to San Vicente was completed in autumn 2011 and will be commissioned in September 2013. In addition, connections are made to the Cercanías Murcia / Alicante.

Utrera has been twinned with the French commune of L' Isle- d'Abeau.
