Sanabria Lake Natural Park
Of Pleistocene glacial
The Lago de Sanabria is one of the largest natural lakes in Spain and the only major ice-age glacial lake in the country.
Location
The almost 3.5 square kilometers and a maximum of 53 meters deep lake is located at an altitude of around 1000 meters. in the community Galende in the northwest of the province of Zamora. The most important inflow and outflow is the Río Tera.
Nature Park
On October 27, 1978, the National Park Parque Natural del Lago de Sanabria y Alrededores was set up with a parking area of 223.65 km ² in the area of the lake. Nevertheless, the lake has become a popular holiday destination in the region, which is not without adverse effects in the whole field of ecology remains (→ weblink).
Others
Since 2011, operating on the lake, a wind-and solar -powered catamaran excursion ( Helios Cousteau ), whose transparent Plexiglas floor allows multiple observations of the animal and plant world.
Attractions
- The former Cistercian monastery of San Martín de Castañeda is located approximately one kilometer north of the lake. Here is now the Information Centre of the Natural Park ( Parque del Centro de Interpretación ).
- About 18 kilometers south-east of the lake is the remarkable place Puebla de Sanabria, whose medieval-style village stands as Conjunto histórico - artístico under monument protection.
