Sanafir Island

Sanafir (Arabic جزيرة صنافير ) is an island in the Gulf of Aqaba. It belongs, together with the adjacent west Tiran Island to Tabuk Province of Saudi Arabia, but is leased to Egypt.

Geography

The island is part of the Strait of Tiran. Today, about 33 km ² island is just as Tiran to Ras Mohammed National Park. The island is about nine kilometers from the Saudi Arabian mainland ( Ra's al Qaşbah ), and Egypt ( Sinai Peninsula), almost 23 km. The neighboring island of Tiran is located 2.8 km west of Sanafir, of these separated by the Straits Halq Qarūsh al. Between the two lies the reef Inselm Sha'b Abū Tinun.

To the east of the island, numerous rugged limestone hills, the highest rise, however, the 49 meter high Ra's Şināfīr, is located near the southwestern end of the island.

History

Israel occupied the island during the Suez crisis, and from 1967 to 1982 as a result of the Six Day War.
