Sanarate

Sanarate on the map of Guatemala

Sanarate is a 10,000 inhabitants town and a municipality in the department of El Progreso in Guatemala. It is located about 55 km northeast of Guatemala City and 25 km south-west of Guastatoya to around 800 meters. In Monte Grande ( Cerro Grande ), three kilometers north- west of Sanarate, branches off from the Atlantic Highway CA 9 National Road 19 to the southeast from which via Sanarate and Sansare to Jalapa and Jutiapa. Sanarate has a station on the disused railway line since 2007 Puerto San José - Puerto Barrios.

The 273 km ² large municipality extends from the valley of the Río Motagua in the northwest to the southern hills of El Progreso. The municipality has a total of about 35,000 inhabitants, of which the majority live in rural settlements and villages, including El Upayón, San Juan, Agua Salóbrega, Sansirisay El Llano, El Barranquillo, El Conacastón, San Miguel, Conacaste, El Monte Grande, Jutiapía, El Estoraque, Hato Viejo, Puente Platanos, Quebrada Seca, Montepeque, El Florido, Cucajol, El Chichicaste, El Amatillo, La Pila Escondida, El Caracol, El Sinaca, La Coyotera, Los Izotes, La Laguna, Santa Lucía Los Ocotes, Llano de Morales, El Carrizo, Jocotón, El Carmen, Panajax, Sabaneta, San Rafael, Las Tunas, El Terrerito, Cerro Blanco, Agua Dulce, Puente La Barranquilla and El Trapichito.

Adjacent Municipalities are Morazán in the north, Guastatoya in the east, in the southeast Sansare and San Antonio La Paz in the southwest. To the west of the departments of Baja Verapaz Sanarate and Guatemala, in the south of Jalapa.

The municipality Sanarate belonged in the 19th century to the Department of Guatemala.
