Sanchia of Provence

Sancha of Provence (French Sancie de Provence ) (* 1225, † November 9, 1261 ) was the third daughter of Ramon Berenguer V of Provence and Beatrice of Savoy. It was described as " incomparable beauty".

Through the mediation of her sister Eleanor of Provence she married on November 23, 1243 in Westminster Abbey, Richard of Cornwall, Earl of Cornwall, whose first wife had just died. The cost of the wedding were mainly paid for by a tax that was imposed on the Jews of the country. The extravagance of the festivities can be recognized by the fact that thirty thousand plates were prepared solely for the wedding dinner.

It was ( English: Queen of the novel ) as "Queen of the Romans " on May 17, 1257 Queen of Germany crowned with her husband in the Aachen Cathedral.

The couple had three sons:

  • Richard of Cornwall (1246-1246)
  • Edmund, 2nd Earl of Cornwall ( 1249-1300 ), married to Margaret de Clare († 1312).
  • Richard of Cornwall ( 1252-1296 ).

Sanchia died in November 1261 and was buried in Hayles Abbey, Gloucester.
