Sancho III of Castile

Sancho III. El Deseado, surnamed " the desire of " (* 1134, † August 31 1158 in Toledo) was from 1157 to 1158 King of Castile. He was the eldest son of King Alfonso VII of Castile and León and his wife Berenguela of Barcelona, a daughter of Ramon Berenguer III ..

On February 4, 1151 the 17 -year-old heir to the throne married the Princess Blanche of Navarre ( * after 1133; † August 12, 1156 ) is a daughter of King García IV and Marguerite de l' Aigle. His four years younger brother Ferdinand II was King of Galicia since 1154, but received after the death of his father, the Kingdom of Leon and Asturias awarded. After the accession of Ferdinand in León, conflicts arose with the local nobility, in which Sancho III. interfered.

Sancho III. was crowned after the death of his father on August 21, 1157 in Toledo and only reigned for a full year. The dispute with his brother, were settled by the Treaty of Sahagun in which Ferdinand and Sancho demarcated their zones of influence and met arrangements for mutual succession, but on August 31, 1158 Sancho died unexpectedly after only one year of government. He was buried in the Cathedral of Santa María. He left two sons, ( Alfonso VIII and García ).
