Walleye ( Sander vitreus )

Sander is a genus within the family of the Real perch. Some species are important food fish.

Features

Sander are elongated, laterally flattened little fish that reach depending on the type 40 to about 100 cm body length. They have two separate dorsal fins, a terminal mouth and over 40 scales on along the lateral line organ. The swim bladder develops the sides of the esophagus on both sides of an extension in the direction of occipital and middle ear, which the sense of hearing is improved.

The genus includes five species:

  • Canadian walleye ( Sander canadensis)
  • Zander ( Sander lucioperca )
  • Sea perch or Seezander ( Sander marinus )
  • Walleye or Zander American ( Sander vitreus )
  • Volga zander, stone Schill or Berschlik ( Sander volgensis )
