Sándor Cséfai

Sándor Cséfay or Cséfai [ ʃa ː ː ndor tʃe fɒ.i ] ( born July 13, 1904 in Budapest, † September 2, 1984 ) was a Hungarian field handball player and coach. Today he is considered the founder of the sport of handball in Hungary.

Sándor Cséfay who had been previously involved in the Workers' Olympics, the first of the sport of handball in Hungary was established. He began some players for the national team to train. The first tournament of the newly formed team was the handball tournament of the Summer Olympics in 1936. Their first game they lost 22:0 against the favored German team, as they could their second game against the United States but win 7:2, they qualified for the final round. There they had no chance and all three games were pretty much lost. In the end, the team remained therefore only the thankless fourth place behind the teams from Germany, Austria and Switzerland. He was also a member of the team and played three games in which he, however, not score.

In the Field Handball World Cup 1938, the Hungarian team won their first round game against Denmark with 10:6. In the semifinals they lost again significantly with 14:3 against Germany. By 10:2 against Sweden in the 3rd place match Sándor Cséfay could but still with the Hungarian team win the bronze medal.
