Sándor Végh

Sándor Végh ( born May 17, 1912 Transylvanian Cluj ( Kolozsvár ), Romania; † 7 January 1997 Freilassing ) was a Hungarian-born conductor and violinist.

He studied at the Academy of Music in Budapest, founded in 1931, the Hungarian Trio, in 1933 member of the Hungarian String Quartet and in 1940 professor at the Academy of Music in Budapest. He founded his own string quartet, the " Végh Quartet ", with whom he went from 1946 on international concert tours and for a long time as one of the best was. He also performed as a soloist and later as a conductor, played with the leading pianists in a duo and led master classes for violin and chamber music in Basel and Dusseldorf. At times, he took over as professor a professor at the Hochschule für Musik Freiburg. From 1978, the Salzburg Camerata Academica headed Végh. He played for many years together with the cellist Pablo Casals at the Festival of Prades. He had French citizenship, but also lived in Switzerland, namely in Basel and since 1971 in Greifensee near Zurich.

Sándor Végh was a student of violin virtuoso and composer Jeno Hubay and was friends with the pianist and composer Bela Bartok. As a conductor, he was admired by Sergiu Celibidache. With his quartet he was also known for his cycles of all quartets by Beethoven and Bartók. Since 1958 he played on the Paganini, a violin made ​​by Stradivari in the year 1724.
