Sandro Bondi

Sandro Bondi ( born May 14, 1959 in Fivizzano, Province of Massa -Carrara ) is an Italian politician of the Popolo della Libertà. In Silvio Berlusconi's fourth cabinet he was from May 2008 to March 2011 the Italian Minister of Culture.

Political career

Bondi initially grew up in Lausanne, where his family had emigrated. After his return to Italy, he joined the Communist youth organization ( Federazione Italiana Giovanile Comunista ), whose chairman he was in the native Lunigiana ( Massa -Carrara and La Spezia ). His studies in philosophy at the University of Pisa, he graduated with a thesis on the Augustinian preacher Leonardo Valazzana.

As democratically -minded Catholic, he became involved in the Italian Communist Party (PCI) and was on their list to the mayor of Fivizzano elected in 1989. However, he was replaced by a coalition of Socialists and Christian Democrats in this office back in 1992. Soon after, he left the PCI.

By the sculptor Pietro Cascella he learned Silvio Berlusconi, and became his close adviser and secretary. As part of the campaign in 2001 he was for putting together a richly illustrated Berlusconi Biography ( Una storia italiana ) is responsible, which was given away to all Italian households. Because of its extraordinary proximity and allegiance to the leader of the Forza Italia he belongs to the group of so-called Berluscones.

In the parliamentary elections of 2001 Bondi has been selected for the Forza Italia in the electoral district of Lombardy 1 in the Chamber of Deputies. After his media- effective use for Forza Italia in the regional elections in 2005, he was appointed coordinator of his party at the national level. In 2006 he was elected deputy again in the parliamentary elections in the constituency Campania 2. During his election to the Italian Senate was successful in the early general elections in 2008, he was defeated in the concurrent election to the office of President province of Massa -Carrara his rival candidates from the Partito Democratico.

After his appointment to the Italian culture minister in the new cabinet Berlusconi on 8 May 2008, he handed over the office of the national coordinator of Forza Italia to Denis Verdini. At the founding congress of the PdL Bondi was appointed along with Verdini and La Russa on 29 March 2009 back to this office.

Due to the increasing deterioration of the archaeological site at Pompeii, the opposition has called in November 2010 with a no-confidence motion the resignation of Bondi, which was rejected on 26 January by a narrow margin. Nevertheless Bondi offered on March 3, 2011 Prime Minister Berlusconi to resign, who accepted it on March 23.
