Sandro Chia

Sandro Chia ( born April 20, 1946 in Florence ) is a contemporary Italian - American artist. He is next to Enzo Cucchi and Mimmo Paladino one of the main representatives of the post-modern Italian Transavantgarde ( Italian: Trans Avant Guard ), which was first stepped into the public spotlight mid-1970s.

He decided as a child to become a painter and later studied at the Istituto d' Arte in Florence and at the Accademia di Belle Arti. He made ​​numerous trips to India, Turkey, and throughout Europe.

1970 Chia settled in Rome and developed his own style of conceptual art. He received in 1980 a grant from the city of Moenchengladbach and stayed there for some time. Then he moved to New York from Chia where he like his fellow artist Francesco Clemente, constantly shuttled between the U.S. and his native Italy. He played his first exhibition at Sperone Westwater Gallery recognizing other renowned artists such as Andy Warhol.

Work

Sandro Chia draws his imagery from an eclectic fundus and frequently quoted in his work earlier artistic periods and movements, such as the Italian Mannerism, Cubism, Futurism or Fauvism.
