Sandy Creek Covered Bridge State Historic Site

The Sandy Creek Covered Bridge State Historic Site is located in Jefferson County of the U.S. state of Missouri. The historic bridge in the 508 -acre State Park connects the path from headquarters Hillsboro over the Sandy Creek from St. Louis County.

Of the original 30 covered wooden bridges in Missouri are only four survived. John H. Morse designed the Sandy Creek Covered Bridge as part of a nationwide construction program after the Civil War. The dimensions are about 22.5 m in length and 5.5 m width, the clearance height is not quite 4 m. The design as a covered bridge served primarily the weather protection of the wood used in the construction and metal parts.

In 1886, the bridge was destroyed by a spring flood. In August of the same year the bridge was rebuilt by Henry Steffin original.

1970 was added to the Sandy Creek Covered Bridge on the National Register of Historic Places. 1984 caused another flood severe damage that made repair work required. Meanwhile, the bridge is open only to pedestrian traffic. The shape of an open barn in conjunction with the red paint to make the bridge has become a popular motif for photographers and painters.

The Burfordville Covered Bridge as part of the Bollinger Mill State Historic Site and the Locust Creek Covered Bridge are built on the same principle.
