Sangalhos is a comune ( Freguesia ) at the Portuguese circuit Anadia. 4064 inhabitants live in it (as at 30 June 2011). The community has become known for its sparkling wine and its bicycle manufacturing. Here is the Velódromo Nacional, the racing hall of Portuguese Cycling Federation, the Federação Portuguesa de Ciclismo.

History

Clues point to the presence Celtiberian Turdulen and Romans. The area was under the city Talabriga, and was not a settlement of greater importance. First mentions of the present-day village are documented from 957.

1220 was Sangalhos an independent municipality. Since the first half of the 14th century it was to a Vila and an independent county, and received city rights in 1514 by King Manuel I..

In the course of administrative reform by the Liberal revolution in Portugal in 1822 the county Sangalhos was disbanded and came to the county Oliveira do Bairro, then to São Lourenço do Bairro, and finally since 1853 to be one of Anadia.

With the arrival of the railway line Linha do Norte in 1864 slowly began a recovery in the community, particularly through the wine cellar, ceramic production and bicycle factories. 1985 Sangalhos the status of a Vila ( town ) was given again.
