Sangatte

Sangatte (Dutch Zandgat, dt in as sand hole ) is a French town near Calais with 4697 inhabitants ( Jan. 1 2011 ) in the Pas -de- Calais, in the Nord -Pas -de -Calais. The city's name is Low Franconian origin.

Under this oceanfront city of the underwater part of the Euro Tunnel, linking France and Britain begins.

Location

Sangatte is between Calais in the North East and the Cap Blanc -Nez in the southwest on the English Channel coast.

History

Blériot Plage

The aviation pioneer Louis Blériot launched on 25 July 1909 by the northern and today named after him beach for the first successful Channel crossing to Dover.

World War II

In Sangatte in the Second World War, the so-called battery Lindemann was set up by the Axis powers. The three largest cannons by caliber 40.6 cm, covering the Pas de Calais, secured the passing through the Canal and regularly took Dover, Ramsgate and Folkestone on the British Isles under attack. The threat of hellfire corner, as the area was called to Sangatte by the English, went out, remained composed until September 1944.
