Sanibel is a city in Lee County in the U.S. state of Florida with 6,469 inhabitants ( 2010).

Geography

The city is located on Sanibel Iceland on the Gulf of Mexico and is only accessible via the Sanibel Causeway toll from the mainland, which runs over two man-made islands. According to city ordinance may there be higher than the highest palm tree no house.

The island is famous for its beautiful beaches, where there are the largest mussel occurrence of the U.S., especially at Bowman 's Beach Park and for a variety of domestic an avian species (eg White Ibis, Roseate Spoonbill, darters, herons, pelicans, divers, ospreys ). However, it can also be seen alligators, raccoons and manatees ( manatees ).

The island is also known for being home to many former CIA employees. One of the most famous residents of the city and former mayor who resigned on 5 May 2006, CIA Director Porter Goss Johnston.

History

In 1884 the island was first settled and founded in 1974, the City of Sanibel. In 1981, the then German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt and his wife visited the island Loki during a private holiday. In 2004, Sanibel was hit by Hurricane Charley, causing the most severe storm damage in 44 years. At that time, in 1960, the island was hit by Hurricane Donna directly.

Religions

Sanibel there are three different churches of three different denominations. There is also a no denominational church belonging ( as of 2004).

Demographics

According to the 2010 census, the then 6,469 inhabitants distributed to 7,821 households. The population density was 145 inh. / Km ². 98.0 % of the population were white, 0.6 % African American, 0.1% Native American and 0.4 % Asian Americans. 0.3 % were members of other ethnic groups and 0.6 % of various ethnicities. 2.3% of the population were Hispanic or Latino.

In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 62.3 % of all households lived in 9.1 % of all households with persons at least 65 years. 67.7 % of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring ). The average size of a household was 1.92 persons and the average family size is 2.28 people.

8.5% of the population were younger than 20 years, 5.5% were 20 to 39 years old, 21.8 % were 40-59 years old and 64.0 % were at least 60 years old. The median age was 65 years. 47.3 % of the population were male and 52.7 % female.

The average annual income was $ 88,906, while 5.5 % of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 96.42 % of the population spoke Spanish 2.36% and 1.22 % had a different mother tongue.

Crime

The crime rate in 2010 was 83 points ( U.S. average: 266 points ) in the low range. There was a robbery, two injuries, 18 burglaries, 89 robberies, car theft and arson.
