Sanje Mangabey ( Cercocebus sanjei )

The Sanje Mangabey ( Cercocebus sanjei ) is a primate of the family Cercopithecidae ( Cercopithecidae ). It is endemic in Tanzania. It was formerly and is occasionally even today as a subspecies of Haubenmangabe ( Cercocebus galeritus ) is considered.

Sanje mangabey - have a gray coat, the belly is lighter, almost whitish. The hairless face skin is pink or gray, like all members of its family have whitish eyelids. The tail is relatively long.

These primates are exclusively before on some eastern slopes of the Udzungwa Mountains in southern Tanzania, where they inhabit forests along river banks at an altitude 400-1600 meters.

They are diurnal and hold off on both on the ground and in the trees. They live in groups. Their diet consists of fruit, seeds, nuts and small animals.

Sanje mangabey - are among the most endangered primates in Africa. The total population is estimated at fewer than 1,300 animals living in two populations 85 km apart. The main threat is the destruction of their already small living space, associated with the hunting. However, the larger of the two populations living in a conservation area, the Udzungwa Mountains National Park. The IUCN lists the species as " critically endangered " ( endangered ).
