Sankt Gerold

St. Gerold is a municipality in the district of Bludenz in Vorarlberg, Austria with 355 inhabitants (December 31, 2013).

Geography

St. Gerold is located in the westernmost province of Austria, Vorarlberg, the district of Bludenz at 920 meters above sea level in the Great Walser Valley. 35.8 percent of the area is forested and other 46.0 percent Alps.

Quarters are Innerberg and Außerberg that by the Falsterbach ( Castle Tobel ) are separated.

In the east borders St Gerold in Blons, to the south and to the west by Raggal Thuringian mountains, all in the district of Bludenz. In the north, St. Gerold borders the municipality in the district of Feldkirch laterns.

History

The first settler was around 950 the hermit Gerold of Großwalsertal. Over his grave a monastery, the provost of St. Gerold, in its vicinity are soon settled Romansh arose. The pilgrimage church was consecrated in 1313. In the 14th century German -speaking Walser supplanted the Roman population. Until 1648 was under the provost of sovereignty Blumeneggs and from then until 1802, she was provost of the Abbey of Einsiedeln Empire.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms was created in 1971 after a design by the artist and Schrunser heraldist Konrad Honold. It refers to the settlement history of the community. The Capricorn is the symbol of Walser.

Economy
