Homophobia and Islamophobia

In March 2013, the city provoked nationwide attention, especially since Mayor Manfred Tatzl (ÖVP ) said: "We are here in the country, homosexuality is condemned every one. " Also there is " Thank God " no Muslims in the village. Occasion for these remarks, of which many residents of St. Veit immediately distanced, was a ban on preaching at Easter and the retirement of the Catholic priest Carl Tropper by the Diocese of Graz -Seckau after years of verhetzenden statements against homosexuality and Islam in the parish sheet or in sermons.

Culture and sights

Is well recognized for its baroque pilgrimage church of St. Vitus, with impressive paintings at the vaulted ceiling that created the painter Felix Barazutti 1914-1921. The figures carry the traits of his employees, financiers and people from the region. Among others, Karl Marx is shown that speaketh with his hand raised to workers. In addition, the church has an organ of Christopher Egedacher who had built 1688/89 for Mariazell, and which was erected here in 1753. The church is dedicated to St. Vitus (June 15, Saint Vitus' Day ).
