Sant'Angelo, Rome
Sant'Angelo is the XI. and smallest area of Rione (neighborhood ) in Rome. It lies on the left bank of the Tiber, opposite the Tiber Island.
History
The name of the neighborhood comes from the small church of Sant'Angelo in Pescheria. In the imperial period, the area was part of the Regio IX Circus Flaminius, which was named after the Circus. On the territory of modern Rione there were also the Portico of Octavia and Philip. 1555 here the ghetto for the Jews of Rome was established.
