Sant Ravidas Nagar district

Sant Ravidas Nagar district (Hindi: संत रविदास नगर, also: Sant Ravidas Nagar Bhadohi ) is a district of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Administrative center is the city Gyanpur, the largest city is Bhadohi. Bears his name the district after the poet saint Ravidas, who was born probably in the 15th century near Varanasi ( Benares ).

Geography

Sant Ravidas Nagar district is located in the Gangetic Plain in eastern Uttar Pradesh Varanasi and Allahabad between cities on the northern bank of the Ganges, India's largest current and the holy river of the Hindus. Neighboring districts are Varanasi in the east, in the south of Mirzapur, Allahabad and Jaunpur in the west to the north. With an area of 1,015 square kilometers Sant Ravidas Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh is the smallest. It is divided into three Tehsils Aurai, Bhadohi and Mirzapur Gyanpur and belongs to the Division.

History

The area of the district of Sant Ravidas Nagar belonged in the 18th century to the possessions of the Maharajas of Benares. After this had ceded its sovereignty to the British, the area was incorporated as part of the district of Mirzapur in British India, but remained as a family estate owned by the Maharajas. 1911, the British gave the lands of the Maharajas the status of the principality Benares. This consisted of two enclaves west and southeast of the city of Varanasi, the western is congruent with the current district area. After Indian independence the princely state of Benares was incorporated into the district of Varanasi. Sant Ravidas Nagar in 1996, sparked as a separate district from the district of Varanasi.

Population

According to the 2011 census of District Sant Ravidas Nagar has 1,578,213 inhabitants. Between 2001 and 2011 the population grew by 15 percent. The district is rural: Less than 15 percent of the population live in urban areas (the mean of the state is 22 percent). Here, Sant Ravidas Nagar is very densely populated: the population density is 1,555 inhabitants per square kilometer, nearly twice as high as in the already high average Uttar Pradesh ( 829 inhabitants per square kilometer). The literacy rate is 69 percent close to the mean of the state (68 percent).

The population of the district according to the 2001 census Hindus represent 88 percent of the vast majority. There is also a Muslim minority of 12 percent. The Muslims concentrate on the cities: Under the city's population, they make up almost half of the population.
