History

The first settlement on the site of the present city of Santa Ana was founded by the Maya Pokomane peoples. They called the settlement " Cihuatehuacan " (place of priestesses ). On June 26, 1569 founded the Archbishop of Guatemala, Bernardino de Villalpando, a chapel in the former village and dedicated the Church of Saint Anne, mother of the Virgin Mary. Thus, the settlement was renamed after these saints and renamed as " Santa Ana la Grande ".

In the 19th century, the old chapel was destroyed by lightning in part. The new construction of the church began before the Diocese of Santa Ana was founded. The new cathedral was consecrated on 11 February 1913. This cathedral is built in the Gothic style, something that sets them apart from most built in the colonial style churches in El Salvador and even in Latin America. 1995 appointed to the Cathedral to the National Monument.

Current mayor of the city is Francisco Polanco ( FMLN ).
