Santa Cesarea Terme
Santa Cesarea Terme is a Southeast Italian community ( comune ) with 3021 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Lecce in Puglia. The municipality is situated approximately 38 km south-southeast of Lecce in southern Salento on the coast to the Mediterranean. Here the Adriatic passes into the Ionian Sea.
History
The district Cerfignano to go back to a Greek foundation. Vitigliano was first mentioned in documents in 1447. From the 16th century come four towers, was built by Charles V in the Kingdom of Naples to protect against Seeangriffen.
Personalities
- Carmelo Bene (1937-2002), theater and film director, grew up in Santa Cesarea Terme.
