Santa Cruz de Cangas de Onís

Santa Cruz de Cangas de Onís is a small chapel in Cangas de Onís, which was the capital of the Kingdom of Asturias in northern Spain to 774 AD. It was started 737 and consecrated according to the original foundation, which is considered the first literary document of the Reconquista. It is considered the first Christian church, which was built after the Moorish invasion, and is probably the oldest Christianized megalithic monument of the Iberian Peninsula.

The chapel is located on the artificial hill of a dolmen and was founded by Favila, the second king of Asturias. The present chapel is a reconstruction from 1951, which was built on the same site on which the original was destroyed during the Spanish Civil War building stood. According to legend, King Favila and his wife were buried. In the crypt of the church there is an approximately 4000 years old Dolmenrest, decorated with engravings and paintings.
