The city of Santa Cruz do Sul located in southern Brazil, 155 km north-west from Porto Alegre, is also referred to as the capital of the tobacco. It is bordered by Rio Pardo, Veracruz, Venâncio Aires and Candelária.

The university city of Santa Cruz do Sul is located in the valley of the Rio Pardo in Brazil's state of Rio Grande do Sul. The approximately 120,000 inhabitants living in an area of 733 km ². The per capita income is among the highest in Brazil, in spite of everything, there are favelas. The newspaper of the place Gazeta do Sul has a regular German supplement. A major employer is the cigarette factory of Philip Morris International and Souza Cruz ( British American Tobacco). The University UNISC ( Universidade de Santa Cruz do Sul ) was founded in 1962.

History

Santa Cruz do Sul was founded on 31 March 1877 by German immigrants who came mostly from the Hunsrück. Even today, the so-called Riograndenser Hunsrückisch is spoken in the area around the city running. 1924 a Protestant church was built according to plans by two German architects. She is one of the largest Lutheran churches in Rio Grande do Sul and the largest neo-Romanesque church in Latin America.
