Santa Maria dei Servi (Siena)

The Basilica di San Clemente in Santa Maria dei Servi (usually just called Basilica dei Servi ) is one of the four basilicas in Siena, one of the three basilicas in the historic center.

Location

The basilica is located within the city walls of Siena at Piazza Manzoni. This is located in the third Terzo di San Martino in Contrada Valdimontone (Aries). To the church also belongs to the Convention, which was led by the Servites, and the resulting 1380 Oratorio della Santissima Trinità.

History

The basilica was built from the Chiesa di San Clemente, which was built around 1234 by the Order of the Servites. Brick supplies the city of Siena are documented (about 50,000 ) to support the expansion of the church from the year 1362. The consecration of the church took place on May 18, 1533 instead, it was to be finished until 1537. Church façade remained unfinished. From 1890 to 1901, the Basilica of Giuseppe Partini and Agenore Socini was restored. The Campanile dates from the 14th century and was completely restored in 1926. The basilica is part of the Archdiocese of Siena - Colle di Val d' Elsa - Montalcino. In the church, the relics of Francesco Patrizi are da Siena (1266-1328) and of Gioacchino da Siena ( to 1258-1305 ).

Organ

The organ was built in 1925 by the organ builder Mascioni. The instrument is located behind the main altar. It has 19 stops on two manuals and pedal. The Spieltrakturen are mechanical, the Registertrakturen are electric.
