Santa Maria del Suffragio (L'Aquila)

The church of Santa Maria del Suffrage, popularly commonly Anime Sante ( the Holy Souls ), is a 18th century church in the city of L' Aquila.

Building

Construction began on 10 October 1713, ten years after the earthquake of 1703, when it was decided to build a new headquarters for the Confraternity of Suffrage ( Brotherhood of intercession ), as the existing building was badly damaged by the earthquake.

The building, whose execution was entrusted to the architect Carlo Buratti, was completed after several phases. 1770 began the implementation of the facade by Gianfrancesco Leomporri, while the dome was added in 1805 by Giuseppe Valadier.

The church, one of the most important monuments of the capital of the Abruzzo region, was heavily damaged by the earthquake on 6 April 2009, and several aftershocks. Due to the almost complete collapse of the dome, which was broadcast live by chance in a news broadcast by RAI, her image was a symbol of the earthquake and the destruction of L' Aquila.

Equipment

The organ dates back to an instrument that was built in 1897 by organ builder Pacifico Inzoli. Currently, the tool is removed, because it was damaged during the earthquake of 2009. The purely mechanical instrument has 14 registers, which are each divided into bass and Diskantseiten. The stop knobs are on the left and right of the table.
