Santa Maria della Catena

Santa Maria della Catena is a church building in Palermo. It is located south of the harbor on the Via della Cala.

The building was built 1500-1540 is an example of the architectural style of the Catalan late Gothic period. A porch with three arches leads into a three-nave interior with tall columns, which was remodeled in the 18th century in the Baroque style. This stucco work were now removed, however, to bring to bear the original condition of the structure again.

The name Santa Maria della Catena ( Holy Mary of the chain ) goes back to the fact that the port earlier each evening was cordoned off from the church with a chain. Today see the church often hosts concerts.
